How to Stop Cheque Payment?

Via InstaServices

  • Access InstaServices and Start: For a stop payment cheque request, go to the official InstaServices page, click "Stop Payment" and then "Start Journey" to begin.

  • Validate Yourself: Enter your registered mobile number along with the Date of Birth/PAN/Customer ID to verify identity, then click Continue.

  • Enter OTP and Confirm: Input the OTP received on your registered mobile number, agree to the terms and conditions and proceed. Your customer details will be auto-filled.

  • Select Account and Cheque Numbers: From the dropdown, choose the Account. Enter either a single cheque number (fill the same number in the start and end fields) or a range of cheques to block.

  • Provide Reason and Review: Select the reason for the stop payment, check the preview screen to confirm details, then click Continue.

  • Authenticate Securely: Complete two-factor authentication using your Debit Card or NetBanking credentials.

  • Get Acknowledgement: You'll see an on-screen confirmation that your stop cheque request has been successfully placed.

Important Notes for InstaServices

  • Keep your registered mobile number and Debit Card/NetBanking details handy to complete the process.

  • For multiple cheques, all numbers between the start and end fields will be stopped; for a single cheque, enter the same number in both fields.

  • Once issued, a stop-payment instruction cannot be withdrawn.

  • Add a note that, in addition to PAN/Customer ID, Aadhaar OTP may sometimes be used.

  • Log in to HDFC Bank NetBanking.

  • On the dashboard menu, go to Accounts (or Cheques, Cash & Demand Drafts) > then Pay/Cheques/Demand Draft/Stop or Block Cheque Payment. 

  • Select the Account from which the cheque was issued.

  • Enter the cheque number(s). If stopping one cheque, enter the same number in the start and end fields. 

  • Confirm with secure authentication (OTP/password).

  • Receive confirmation or reference slip/message.

  • Call HDFC PhoneBanking helpline number: 1800 1600 or 1800 2600 (accessible across India)

  • Be prepared with the Telephone Identification Number (TIN), cheque number, cheque issue date, payee name, and sometimes the amount.

  • Complete any identity verification the agent requests (e.g., registered mobile number, verification questions).

  • Ask them to initiate the stop payment on the cheque. 

  • Note down the reference/acknowledgement for your records.

  • Visit your nearest HDFC Bank branch to request a stop payment in person.

  • Take a stop payment request letter/cheque stop payment letter, mentioning the Account number, cheque number(s), date of issue, payee, and reason for stopping payment.

  • Show valid ID as required (passport/Aadhar/PAN, etc.).

  • Submit the request to the bank officer. 

  • Make sure you get an acknowledgement/counterfoil/receipt for the stop-payment request.

Pre-requisites for Stop Payment of Cheque(s)

  • You must be a Resident Individual or Senior Citizen with a Savings or Salary Account (or Non-Resident Individual with an Indian mobile updated).
  • This Service is available for customers having Account(s) with a holding pattern as Singly or Either-or Survivor.
  • Jointly held Accounts (in "Joint" holding pattern) typically require a visit to the branch rather than doing it online.
  • Generally, the stop remains effective until the cheque is presented for clearing, but if a cheque is already honoured/cleared before your stop request, it cannot be reversed.

Why You Might Need to Stop a Cheque Payment?

  • You may wish to block or stop cheque payments when:

    • The cheque was lost or stolen.
    • You suspect fraud or unauthorised use.
    • You entered an incorrect amount or payee name.
    • A duplicate cheque has been issued.
    • The cheque is unsigned or bears the wrong date/post-dated incorrectly.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a particular cheque, it is ₹90, and for a range of cheques, it is ₹180. If done through NetBanking, there are no charges involved.

The funds stay in your Account (i.e., the cheque is not debited) unless someone else presents a valid cheque.

There isn't a fixed time limit imposed by the bank publicly, but the stop must be placed before the cheque is presented for clearance. Once cleared, it cannot be stopped.
