What is Advance Tax?

As a taxpayer, if your tax liability is more than ₹10,000 per year, you are required to pay advance tax in quarterly instalments (June, September, December and March).

Who Needs to Pay Advance Tax?

The following entities are required to pay advance tax:

  • Salaried individuals with additional income: While employers deduct TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) from salaries, individuals with other income sources such as interest, rental income or capital gains must pay advance tax on these earnings.

  • Self-employed professionals: Doctors, lawyers, freelancers and other professionals with substantial annual income need to estimate and pay their taxes in advance.

  • Businesses: Businesses, including sole proprietorships, partnerships and companies, must pay advance tax on their projected annual income.

  • Individuals with capital gains: Those who earn from the sale of assets like property or stocks during the year must account for these gains when paying advance tax.

Due Dates for Advance Tax Payments

The Income Tax Department of India has set specific deadlines for the payment of advance tax, divided into four instalments:

  • 1st Instalment: 15% of the total estimated tax liability by June 15

  • 2nd Instalment: 45% of the total estimated tax liability by September 15

  • 3rd Instalment: 75% of the total estimated tax liability by December 15

  • 4th Instalment: 100% of the total estimated tax liability by March 15

If you’ve opted for the presumptive taxation scheme under section 44ADA of the Income Tax Act, 1961, you are liable to pay 100% of Advance Tax on or before 15th March of the previous year. Otherwise, you will be liable to pay interest per Section 234B and Section 234C of the I-T Act.
