5 surgeries not covered by insurance but covered by EasyEMI

The blog explains how HDFC’s EasyEMI facility can help finance surgeries not typically covered by insurance, such as IVF, hair transplants, liposuction, rhinoplasty, and facelifts.

Synopsis:

  • IVF treatments are not covered by insurance but can be financed through EasyEMI.
  • Hair transplants involving techniques like FUT and FUE are excluded from insurance coverage.
  • A costly cosmetic surgery, liposuction is typically not covered by health insurance.
  • Rhinoplasty, used for cosmetic or functional nose corrections, is not included in standard insurance plans.
  • Facelift surgeries, aimed at reducing wrinkles and tightening skin, are also not covered by health insurance.

Overview

Undergoing surgery is an expensive business and can take a toll on your savings. While certain surgeries are covered under medical insurance, several others are not. Since many of these treatments are fairly expensive, people in need often postpone them, deeming them inessential. But now, there is no reason for you to delay your surgery anymore. HDFC now offers EasyEMI, an EMI facility through which you can undergo any of these correction surgeries by paying equated monthly instalments.  Here are some of the treatments not covered by insurance.

Medical procedures not covered under Health Insurance

1. IVF treatment

IVF, short for In Vitro Fertilisation, is a method where eggs are fertilised with sperm outside the body in a lab. The resulting embryo is then implanted into the woman’s womb. This approach is often chosen when other fertility treatments have been ineffective or when there are particular issues like blocked fallopian tubes or low sperm count. The steps involved are stimulating the ovaries, retrieving the eggs, fertilising them, cultivating embryos, and transferring them.

In India, IVF treatment typically costs a couple of lakhs, and due to the various medical procedures involved, it is not covered by insurance.

2. Hair transplant

A hair transplant is a surgical action to restore hair growth by relocating hair follicles from one part of the body, typically the back of the head, to areas with thinning or no hair. The procedure involves two main techniques: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), where a scalp strip is removed and dissected, and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), where individual follicles are extracted and implanted. The transplanted hair grows naturally, improving the density and appearance of the hairline. The cost of this treatment depends on the number of grafts. The surgery cost increases as the number of grafts increases, which is largely why insurance providers do not cover it.

3. Liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat from specific body areas. It is usually combined with tummy tuck and breast augmentation surgery. During the procedure, a surgeon makes small incisions and inserts a thin tube known as a cannula to suction out fat deposits. The procedure targets areas such as the abdomen, thighs, and arms, helping to contour and reshape the body. Since the whole procedure is one of the most expensive cosmetic treatments, it is subject to health insurance exclusion.

4. Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a surgical technique for altering the nose's shape or size to correct breathing problems, congenital disabilities, or accidental disfigurement. The process involves modifying the bone and cartilage structure of the nose through small incisions, either inside the nostrils or across the base. It addresses a crooked nose or a large hump and functional issues like nasal obstruction. However, given the cost and the complexity involved in the process, health insurance does not cover the cost.

5. Facelift

Facelift is a type of cosmetic surgery done to remove unwanted wrinkles by tightening facial skin. This surgery also helps restore a youthful appearance by reshaping the lower half of the face. Excess facial skin is removed during surgery.
