Portfolio Investment Scheme (PIS) is a scheme of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that allows Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to purchase and sell shares and convertible debentures of Indian companies on a recognised stock exchange in India. Under this scheme, NRIs and PIOs need to open a designated PIS Bank Account with a designated bank branch to undertake transactions. The bank monitors the transactions and reports them to the RBI.
