Tax
This blog explains how to pay GST, advance tax, and income tax using a credit card, providing step-by-step guidance and highlighting benefits such as improved cash flow, rewards, and milestone-based perks.
Many taxpayers in India believe that tax payments must be made by cheque, demand draft, net banking, or by visiting a bank branch. However, a lesser-known but increasingly used option is to pay GST, advance tax, or income tax using a Credit Card. The article will discuss how you can pay tax using a Credit Card and the benefits of doing so.
Here is the step-by-step guide to make a GST payment through a Credit Card:
Step 1: Visit payment.gst.gov.in/payment/ and log in using your credentials.
Step 2: Navigate to Services > Payments > Create Challan.
Step 3: Choose the 'Credit/Debit Card' option.
Step 4: Select the bank through which you wish to make the payment.
Step 5: Tick the box to accept the terms and conditions.
Step 6: Click on 'Make Payment' to proceed.
Here is how you can make an advance tax payment by a Credit Card:
Step 1: Go to incometaxindia.gov.in
Step 2: Click on 'Pay Taxes Online' under the 'e-File' menu.
Step 3: Choose the appropriate challan, such as ITNS 280 for advance tax.
Step 4: Enter your PAN, assessment year, and other required information.
Step 5: Select 'Payment Gateway' and then 'Credit Card' as the payment method.
Step 6: Proceed to make the payment through the selected bank's gateway.
Here is how to pay income tax with a Credit Card:
Step 1: Access incometax.gov.in and log in to your account.
Step 2: Under the 'e-File' menu, select 'e-Pay Taxes'.
Step 3: Choose the appropriate challan.
Here are some benefits of using a credit card to pay income tax and other government payments:
When you use a Credit Card to pay your income tax, you can delay the actual outflow of funds by taking advantage of your card’s billing cycle and grace period. For example, if you make a payment on the first day of the billing cycle, you could have up to 55 days before the amount is deducted from your bank account.
This extra time is especially helpful for high-value tax payments over ₹1,00,000, letting you manage cash flows in line with your receivables or investment maturities.
You can earn reward points on certain Credit Cards even for government payments like income tax. For example, if you use the HDFC Bank BizBlack Credit Card for income tax or GST payments, you could get up to 16% back in reward points. You can redeem these points for partner services such as hotel stays, flight bookings, and premium experiences.
A tax payment of ₹2,00,000 could give you points worth ₹32,000 if you redeem them wisely. You can redeem these points for flight and hotel bookings along with other partner services.
Certain Credit Cards let you earn milestone-based travel benefits linked to your annual spending, including tax payments. For example, if your card offers complimentary flight tickets on reaching ₹3,00,000 annual spend, your income tax payments will also count.
Paying taxes with a credit card offers a convenient, secure, and rewarding alternative to traditional methods. It not only simplifies GST, advance tax, and income tax payments but also helps manage cash flow, earn valuable reward points, and unlock milestone-based benefits.
